POSITIVE PRE-SEASON PERFORMANCE FOR THE SAINT LAWRENCE LIONS HOCKEY TEAM

With the training camp evaluation, team selection and hard paced practices making headway for the Lions first regular season home game, Coach labadie is very satisfied by the team’s attitude and readiness to work each day. The Lions are in their early stages of team building and hockey orientation. Players have been tested sharply by a very competitive pre season exhibition calendar.

Our goal tending has been exceptional in each of our games. Both Cedrick Lafrance, last years most valuable player and rookie Thierry Tremblay have kept games close in every outing. Veteran blue liners, Francois Fortin and Laurent Dumont have been stand out performers as well as rookie Simon Auger. Forwards Jean Philipe Sansfacon, Gulllaume Kelhetter, and Dominique Lampron bring a touch of speed and skill to our offense. The team is young, with nine 17 year old players on roster.

The Lions exhibition schedule brought them to the Boston area where they tallied 2 wins and 1 loss, defeating Penn Panthers 5-1 and the home team Walpole Express 3-1. The Lions completed their tournament with a 3-1 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers. The tournament enabled two of our rookies, Simon Auger and Dominique Lampron to attract the attention of division I scouts from Sacred Heart University.

This weekend, Saint Lawrence traveled to Burlington Vermont for a four game tournament against Eastern Junior hockey league rivals from the north eastern states. This tournament offers a caliber comparable to Quebec JRAAA hockey and has provided tremendous success in the placement of future Division I and III scholarships . Facing these opponents brings exposure to our players and increases their chances of being recruited to next level opportunities in both the United States and Canada.

In the initial tournament game, the Lions faced the Bay State Breakers at Gutterson arena, home of the University of Vermont Division I hockey team. Cedrick Lafrance kept the Lions close in the first half of the game as the Breakers outshot them 10-2 early in the game. Mathieu Harvey scored at the halfway mark of the final period, allowing the Lions to tie the game 1-1.

Early Saturday morning, the Lions faced their toughest opponent, suffering a 3-0 loss against a team that dressed a much more experienced roster. Their skill level and speed of the Syracuse Stars was difficult to match but our players’ intensity and discipline proved to be a very positive element in preparing the team for follow up 4-2 victory against New York Apple Core. In this game, Lions scoring came from Francois Fortin, Jean Philippe Sansfacon, Vincent Jodoin and Vincent Boivin.

In the final game of the Woodchuck tournament, the Saint Lawrence Lions faced the home team Green Mountaing Glades. The Lions experienced a valuable lesson in athletics. A come from behind victory can build the character and confidence required to win championships. This is what the players offered themselves in their final Woodchuck show case outing. The hungry Lions erased a two goal deficit late in the game to force a shoot out. Jean Philipe Sansfacon’s three goal performance carried the Lions to a 3-3 tie after regulation play. During the shootout, Dominique Lampron scored what proved to be the game winning goal, while goal tender Thierry Morin Tremblay went three for three, stopping Green Mountain Glades scorers on each occasion. The team took a major step forward and a wave of enthusiasm rushes through each member of the Saint Lawrence hockey program as they prepare to open the season against Three Rivers next Saturday at Sainte Foy Arena at 7h30PM.
